Planning for 2012

I would like to start by thanking everyone that turned up to last nights Board meeting and AGM.

Events » Community projects » Community Mindmap

The energy in the room was infectious and the ideas for training, projects, events and charity involvement were flowing freely.

Following on from the success of our 'How JCI Reading Can Help You' event the input from new members was fantastic. It was great to see that we have truly shown that JCI Reading can open new doors for people and it's effects can be far more reaching than those simply in the room on the day.

For the last 2 years the main focus of JCI Reading has been on Personal Development, giving members the opportunities to increase knowledge and skills, then apply them.

In 2012 we are committing to increase this to having a larger impact on the community around us. We are looking to increase the number of both community and business projects focusing the training we provide on the specific needs of those projects to ensure they have the highest possible impact. Click on the mindmap to see just some of the areas we are discussing and let us know where you would like to help and add value.

On the official side we had 2 votes to build the foundations for next years board.

I was honoured to be supported to be the President of JCI Reading for 2012 and am excited to be working once again with Clare Franklin who has taken the role of Events Coordinator.

If you have an interest in learning or developing your skills and influencing the impact that JCI Reading will be making over the coming year there are other board positions that can be made to fit you and the commitment you are able to make. Please speak to me to discuss the options.

2012 is going to be a fantastic year, so get involved and help make a difference.

Whether you are running a business, or are an employee working in one, JCI can and will help you

For individuals:
JCI provides development opportunities that may not be available in your current work environment. The opportunity to gain new skills, polish old ones, meet new friends (from all over the world) to take part in or even run projects that mean something to you.
Even if you are currently not working, employers are looking for proactive people, therefore showing an active interest in an organisation such as JCI will do wonders for your CV and Interview presentation.

For Businesses:
We can either give you the opportunity to present your speciality to a receptive audience of young professionals who wish to learn more about the subject
or
Help you to increase the skill set and engagement of your employees by getting them involved in our training and project sessions.

This introduction email barely touches the surface of how JCI can help, so please come along to our 'How JCI Can Help You' evening, kindly hosted by Shirlaws UK, to find out more.

If you have any questions about any of the events, JCI or how to recognise your opportunities then Drop me an email

I look forward to hearing from you.

JCI Reading June Newsletter - Making and Taking Opportunities

To me Life is about recognising, making and taking opportunities.

Since I have been in JCI I have done my best to recognise the opportunities around me (otherwise I would not be in the position to write you this email today!). I am sure that some have let some slip by and I will encourage everybody to consider the little instances that occur daily that if taken will turn into something bigger down the road.

My first big JCI opportunity was the World congress in Tunisia 2009. Carrie randomly mentioned she had a fantastic deal on accommodation for her and her partner and as I had not taken a holiday in a while I booked it.

I have not looked back, mainly because I have not had time! (In a good way) I have been caught up by a fantastic organisation and group of people that have supported, encourage challenged me, and at times there have been frustrations. I am sure that I have also given back encouragement, support and challenges along with my fair share of frustrations, through which we have all come out the other side and have all grown from the experience.

Another excellent example of taking opportunities is Faisal Mooraby. Not only has Faisal recently taken a year off work to go back to study but he is currently in New York at the JCI / UN Global Partnership Summit! Talk about grabbing the opportunities around you with both hands.

So what opportunities have you missed recently? Could you have done with learning more about how to have a confident presence, or learn a little more about networking skills and how to work a room?

Well the old saying of 'It's never too late' is always true, take your first step into JCI by attending our Networking Thursday, or Fast-track the reading of those business books that you keep meaning to read, with our Intro to speed reading. Or challenge yourself to find out about the real you, How you make choices and how to really enjoy everything you do.

If you have any questions about any of the events, JCI or how to recognise your opportunities then Drop me an email

I look forward to hearing from you.

March Newsletter

What a busy year it has been so far!

At the end of January we had our Weekend of Inspiration.

Starting with the JCI London Annual Dinner at the House of Lords on the Friday night. I was invited to sit at the top table with so had one of the best seats to hear Lord Bilimoria talk about his JCI experiences and how he has applied those lessons to various aspects of his life.

Moving swiftly on JCI UK Inspiration Day hosted by JCI Reading. With in excess of 50 attendees this was one of the best attended ID's in several years. Keynote talks from Graham Jones on internet psychology and Jamie Dunn on were interlaced with real JCI Members talking about what JCI means to them, and what they get out of being involved. Some of these Videos can be seen on the JCI Reading Youtube channel more will be added as I get them edited.

For most that would have been enough for one weekend but not for JCI Reading, so we hosted the JCI Presenter Course. Head Trainer Adam Woodhall, and Assistant trainers Solveig and Simon trained 20 participants on the first rung of the official JCI training ladder. For a participants perspective of the course you can read a full report from Diane our Training Director. The following weekend was the JCI Trainer Course hosted by JCI London, I was one of 15 attendees taking the next step on the JCI Training ladder.

All of this gave me plenty to talk about when I was invited to be the lunchtime speaker at Reading Rotary. This was a fantastic opportunity to talk several past presidents of JCI Reading while also communicating the how JCI can help both individuals and businesses.

One of the other skills I talked about at Rotary was how the Presenter and Trainer courses help with public confidence which also lead neatly into our Debating Skills workshop on the 24th Feb.

That is what we have been up to, so what is next?
